Review
Booze & the Blues is a thoroughly entertaining collection of 22 pre-war blues songs about wine, drinking, whiskey
and blues. It's a gimmicky excuse for a collection, but it works, not only because the songs and performances are
good, but because the tracks all have a similar spirit. Among the highlights are tracks by Memphis Minnie, Mississippi
Sheiks, Robert Hicks, the Memphis Jug Band, Amos Easton, Lucille Bogan, Peetie Wheatstraw and Joshua White. ~

Harmonica Shah - Motor City Mojo 2000 (blues)

Image
Pure Detroit urban blues from the artist who was first introduced on the compilations "Hastings Street Grease, Vol. 1 & 2" - his solo album features the return of Little Junior Cannaday on guitar, along with Blues Insurgents.

Although Seward "Harmonica" Shah has blossomed as a musician in the last five years living in the Detroit ghetto, his musical training has come throughout his whole life. Shah was born in Oakland, CA in 1946 and split his youth between there and Sommerville, TX where his mother's family lived. In Texas he lived with his grandparents and listened to his grandfather, Sam Dawson, play guitar. Dawson had recorded some songs for Alan Lomax, and young Seward listened very closely. But when he was 16 he got into some trouble and went back to live with his mother in Oakland. There he got the chance to frequent Slim Jenkins' club on 7th St, near the shipyards. The Bay Area was full of blues performers; Lowell Fulson and Big Mama Thornton were around, and George "Harmonica" Smith, B. B. King and Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee came through. Shah has always been in awe of his predecessors and he followed them closely.

Backed by Booker T & the MGs and the Memphis Horns, Albert King (confusingly, no relation to Freddie or BB--though he named himself after the latter) shows off his spare, elastic, fluid guitar style on this definitive compilation. Songs such ... Full Descriptionas "Laundromat Blues", "Oh, Pretty Woman," and the immortal "Crosscut Saw" with its sinuous, interweaving rhythms are blues classics, while "Born Under a Bad Sign" and "The Hunter" were later covered by Cream and Bad Company respectively. The combination of King and the Memphis musicians makes for some thrilling moments--particularly the guitar's entry under the horns on "Sign" and the interplay between King's guitar and Al Jackson's samba-style drums in "Crosscut Saw." Though King never achieved the fame of the man whose name he took, he created his fair share of great blues recordings, and KING OF THE BLUES GUITAR is an excellent primer to his unique style.

Recorded 1966-68.
